My name is Cornelius okechukwu, back then in my early 30s, I volunteered to donate my blood to a patient who needed it urgently. Few hours from then, I got a message that hepatitis B was found in my blood. It was then I got to know I had hepatitis B. I became worried and had many sleepless nights thinking on when and how I could have contacted this disease. I always loved to donate blood regularly, not due to the money they gave me but for the health benenfits I was told it has for me. But this time I was so disappointed as my blood sample didn’t pass the screening. Hepatitis B!, Hepatitis B!!… It kept ringing in my head wherever I was going. After many sleepless nights, I soon realized knowing how I contacted it was not as important as finding solution to it.

My doctor advised that I should be placed on injections quickly, or else, my liver would start experiencing severe damages as it had almost reached the peak of getting to the cirrhosis stage and then full liver cancer. He mentioned that I was not only observant and that there were some silent signs it would have shown me but that many people who have it think those symptoms are just normal. He mentioned that some of those common signs of Hepatitis include:

• Abdominal pain
• Fever
• Fatigue(frequent tiredness)
• Nausea
• Dark Urine
• Loss of appetitie
• Yellow eyes
• Intermittent joint pains, etc…

And YES, he was right because if not all, I used to feel some of the symptoms he mentioned above. I could never have thought of anything called Hepatitis but my best guess was it was malaria.

 I started the treatment immediately as recommended by the doctor. It consisted of interferon and some injections three times weekly. I continued the treatments for 3 months and my white blood cells had gone so much low that the treatments had to be terminated.

After that I just tried to pretend and not acknowledge the fact that I had hepatitis B. I was fed up. A few years later, someday I was listening  to a health Radio programme on Nigeria Info(99.3FM) wherein, hepatitis B was brought up as the topic and they started comparing it with other types of sexually transmitted diseases. The Medical expert guest explained and emphasized the dangers of Hepatitis and how slow it can be until it graduates to Liver failure and then liver cancer and at this stage it kills faster. He narrated how some of his patients later died due to them not having money for liver transplant after their cases had worsened and could not respond to the usual treatment again. I  got so scared and frightened as I felt I was the main reason the programme was aired that very day. I decided that I had to get rid of this disease and couldn’t continue my life with it.

Then I went to the hospital, I got my biospy done and discovered my condition has gotten so chronic and I was halfway to having cirrhosis and I had  to try the treatments again. So I started interferon again. It was not long after I started again that I started experiencing some usual symptoms but were more aggravated.

I was constantly tired, having some flu-like symptoms, stomach and joint pains. It was supposed to be a year treatment, I combined interferon and some other medications. But due to these discomforts  I was having 5 months into the treatment, my Doctor advised that we stopped it and then he told me the bitter truth; “Mr. Cornellius, Liver Transplant is your sure option now”

It was really hard as the disease had so much stigma around it, imagine being alone and not having anyone around you to talk about it, trying to build up a relationship and the whole hepatitis thing just comes up. It was really painful, I was constantly tired, weak, and always feeling ill and all I ever wanted was to go away from it.

About 2 months later, I strolled to my doctor, May God bless him, he’s kind and always wanted to see me regularly and call me on phone to keep encouraging me as he didn’t want any funny thought(You know!) to cross my mind. On this day, it was my lucky day, I met one of his doctor-friends in his office. He introduced me to him and also introduced him to me as a Senior Medical doctor in one of our Teaching Hospitals. He narrated to him my pathetic journey on this Hepatitis and how he had advised me to quickly source for money in order to be booked for liver transplant.

It was at this point I heard this Senior doctor telling his friend(my doctor) that most times now, Hepatitis is not responsive to chemicalised drugs and interferon injections, especially if they have been administered for a long time on the patient.
